A BRIEF HISTORY OF FUTURE, 11/09/2015 - 24/01/2016
Paintings, sculptures, photos, videos, installations and digital art: over 70 contemporary works question our future up to 2050. The exhibition of the RMFAB addresses major societal themes such as over-consumption, global conflicts, scarcity of natural resources, social and economic inequality, the mutation of the human being. However, these complex topics are challenged by positive and constructive visions, sometimes even humour. Belgian and international artists such as Sugimoto, Boetti, Kingelez, Warhol, LaChapelle, Gursky, Op de Beeck, Yongliang, Turk, Alÿs,... invite us to (re)think the future. The complementary exhibition of the Louvre (24.09.2015 > 04.01.2016) anticipates the future based on a subjective reading of the past and translated by artistic creations from the previous millennia. These two exhibitions are inspired by Jacques Attali's book A Brief History of the Future.

WINTER WONDERS, 27/11/2015 - 03/01/2016
It's probably the event that draws the most visitors to Brussels. Whether you're travelling from the other side of the globe, Laeken, Neder or Haren, the Winter Wonders prove the perfect opportunity to discover Brussels from the angle of conviviality and magic.

This unmissable happening greatly contributes to make our capital city into a privileged city-trip destination.
This year, the Winter Wonders’ guest of honour will be Tunisia, a country of culture and traditions. Through this choice, the City of Brussels is intent on championing the democratic process that stemmed from the "Jasmine Revolution" five years ago and rewarded with this year's Nobel Peace Prize. This marks a strong signal to help the country's main economy, tourism, get back on its feet as quickly as possible.

Like last year, the ice skating rink will be located on the place de la Monnaie and will gain in size. We'll meet our old "classics" once more, including the Grand-Place's Christmas tree and unmissable "sound & light show". The course gains in size every year and will encompass the rue Henri Maus and the Bourse-De Brouckère axis, which has become pedestrian and that will be lit by a thousand lights! These festivities must please everyone.

The heart of Brussels will be accessible to all by public transportation, by car, by bike, on foot… Once again it will be the scene of five magic weeks for a unique ambiance.

Brussels,

source of inspiration

Biennale Art Nouveau et Art Déco
Brussels and Tintin,
Even though Hergé tried to smooth out some of the unduly glaring Brussels references, there is no doubt that the author derived inspiration from his own everyday life and the world he lived in. Cafés, streets, hotels, theatres, museums or parks: the Brussels atmosphere is woven into the filigree of his work throughout. Oftentimes, Tintin, Snowy and their friends are seen against the backdrop of the capital’s typical cityscapes.

HERITAGE DAYS, 19 & 20/09/2015
The next Heritage Open Days in Brussels-Capital Region will take place on 19 and 20 September 2015 and are dedicated to the theme “Workshops, factories and offices”.
Former printing works; chandelier makers; flourmills; bakeries; breweries or factories; small workshops; warehouses; garages or sites linked to the country’s economic development; the 2015 programme is brimming with previously unseen places that illustrate this theme and which are either still fulfilling their original function or have been assigned a new purpose.

With a multitude of activities on offer, which can be experienced on foot, by bus or on a bicycle, the 2015 programme provides an opportunity not only to learn more about the Brussels-Capital Region’s industrial past but also about the development of the service sector, most notably through the establishment of the head offices of major companies in the Region.

THE BELGIANS. AN UNEXPECTED FASHION STORY. 05/06/2015 - 13/09/2015
Surreal, avant-garde and explicit. These are three keywords that are usually associated with Belgian fashion, which is internationally recognised.

This exhibition gives a unique historic overview of the DNA of Belgian fashion, starting with the legendary Antwerp Six (including Dries van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck and Ann Demeulemeester) and working up to the individualistic creations of Martin Margiela, A.F. Vandevorst and Raf Simons. The exhibition also highlights the works of several influential players in various fashion and art disciplines. We will also touch upon the importance of the fashion academies, especially the Antwerp Academy and La Cambre in Brussels. Naturally this exhibition would not be complete without emerging talent like Jean-Paul Lespagnard and Christian Wijnants.

ANNE TERESA DE KEERSMAEKER - 'WORK/TRAVAIL/ARBEID', 20/03/2015 - 17/05/2015
What would it mean for choreography to perform as an exhibition? This question is the point of departure for Work/Travail/Arbeid. In response, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker reimagines her piece Vortex Temporum for the radically different temporal, spatial, and perceptual conditions of a museal space. The choreographer does not simply bring a dance performance into a new kind of space, but rethinks it as a nine weeks long exhibition, accessible to the public and continuously performed during regular opening hours. The original choreography, made for the condensed time and space of a stage performance will thus be entirely reinvented so as to extend itself across a new time and space. This project transforms the conditions that have long been essential to dance and gives a new form to the rigorous choreographic writing for which De Keersmaeker is known. Work/Travail/Arbeid, initiated by WIELS and curator Elena Filipovic.

14-18, IT'S OUR HISTORY!
26/02/2014 > 26/04/2015
The visitor will discover through authentic objects, sceneries, testimonies, multimedia, cinema films and immersive spaces how this conflict has profoundly influenced the history of the 20th century...

For the First World War 100th anniversary commemorations, the Royal Army Museum will organise the major exhibition « 14-18, it's our history ! » as from February 26, 2014. Based on the rich and unique collections of the Royal Army Museum, this exhibition will allow the public to discover all aspects of conflicts, which left Europe battered and weakened. The history of the conflict has been seen in a broader context where a place is left to all actors in this drama. The war and the everyday life during the Belgian occupation will constitute an important part of the exhibition. But most of all he will discover through authentic objects, sceneries, testimonies, multimedia, cinema films and immersive spaces how this conflict has profoundly influenced the history of the 20th century. The role of this exhibition is to awaken a wider audience, who has forgotten how history has shaped his life, to the story of the history of the European war – then global. To achieve this goal, we should appeal more to the emotions, making him feel that this story concerns him: of its past and his future. This exhibition is the meeting place for the history of each – history with a little h – and History – with a big H.

RÉTROSPECTIVE CONSTANTIN MEUNIER, 20/09/2014 - 11/01/2015
From 20 September 2014 to 11 January 2015, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium dedicate a complete overview to Constant Meunier’s career.

Constantin Meunier, who was born on 12 April 1831 in Etterbeek and died on 4 April 1905 in Ixelles/Elsene, is a Belgian sculptor and painter. He is one of the first artists portraying the social reality at the end of the 19th century in Europe.
Meunier starts his career as a sculptor. Between 1857 and 1884 however, he devotes himself to painting. After visiting a few mines and industries, Meunier expresses his interest for workers in his paintings, mainly miners in the Borinage region, dock workers in Antwerp, steelworkers and women workers.

It is only after a stay in Spain where he mainly paints religious scenes that Meunier goes back to bronze sculpting exploring various social themes.

Nevertheless, this exhibition aims to provide a varied overview of the complete work of the artist. For this reason, special attention will be paid to the paintings from the first decades of his career which, to date, have hardly been studied: historical tableaux, civil portraits and religious scenes. As no other the oeuvre of Constantin Meunier is reflecting the main movements and developments in Belgian art from the second half of the 19th century. Alongside a representative selection of paintings and bronzes, a captivating selection of works on paper and documents will be shown.

Constant Meunier’s works of art are to be found across the city. Get acquainted with this major artist through the Meunier trail including the places where he lived as well as his oeuvre integrated in the Brussels landscape:

EMILIO LÓPEZ-MENCHERO & ESTHER FERRER, 04/12/2014 - 29/03/2015
The CENTRALE for contemporary art shows for the first time an exhibition of a major artist of the Brussels art scene. Emilio LÓPEZ-MENCHERO, a Brussels citizen of Spanish origin, was singled out by his performances in the capital (such as Checkpoint Charlie at the Canal - 2010) and the emblematic urban integration Pasionaria, a megaphone near the South Station - 2006. Multifaceted artist, he developed a protean work (painting, video, photography, performance). At our suggestion, he chose to enter into dialogue with the world-renowned artist, Esther FERRER, a pioneer of performance art. Both of Spanish origin, their efforts come together through the themes of identity and corporeality. An exceptional exhibition of two artists for whom art is a political space for freedom beyond the dictates of all kinds.

BROKENSHIP EXHIBITION, 16/06/2014 - 17/10/2014
Parlamentarium welcomes one of the most heartfelt exhibitions in Europe and in the world, the Museum of Broken Relationships, for a temporary exhibition starting from June 16. Initiated by a Croatian couple gone through an art-inspiring break-up, the travelling collection of objects that symbolise a failed relationship has grown larger since its beginnings in 2006, becoming an international sensation warmly welcomed in Paris, London, Singapore and Mexico City, to name a few. The month-long call for donations fostered a great turnout, allowing for an all-Belgian collection of over 50 objects to be gathered in Brussels. The items will be displayed throughout the Parlamentarium, side-by-side another 50 objects from previous exhibitions, donated by the broken hearted from all over the world. Anthems of a brokenship, united in the common language of loss and love, the objects become witnesses and storytellers of a rupture. Each collection tends to broadly reflect the social, cultural, political and historic reality of the location they were collected in, effectively narrating the country's broken heart from a people's perspective. The Croatian exhibition includes a wide variety of objects representing broken relationships in the midst of the war's misery.

Winner of the 2011 Kenneth-Hudson Award for most innovative Museum in Europe, the Museum of Broken Relationships is an exhibition not to be missed. The exhibition will be on display until October 2014 in Parlamentarium.

DUANE HANSON. Sculptures of the American Dream
20.02.2014 > 25.05.2014
From an early age, Duane Hanson was mesmerised with the human form and his fascination with the subject remained. Early sculptures were created from a variety of materials including wood, polyester and bronze.

In the forties, Hanson was faced with abstract expressionism, the dominant trend of the time. With an emphasis on sculpture for fifteen years, he failed to deviate from figuration, despite abstraction. Pop Art and its literal representations of everyday objects such as Warhol’s soup cans and Brillo packets, offered Hanson the means of realism as a form of expression. Trash (1967) is an early example and in his own words: "I went to school and you heard you had to be modern… I didn’t really warm up until Pop Art made Realism legitimate again".
