Created on 21 April 1938 to enliven the pages of the weekly children’s comic launched by the publishing house Dupuis, the character Spirou is one of the emblematic characters of the European comic strip.
He is one of the few characters who belong to their publisher rather than their creator. As such, he has never stopped evolving over the first three-quarters of a century of his existence, throughout the sixty or so of his adventures published in albums. While his red uniform as a bellhop at the Moustic Hotel has made him famous, it is also a limitation. From Rob-Vel, Jijé and Franquin to Yoann and Vehlmann, Schwartz and Emile Bravo in the 21st century, the score of writers who have endeavoured to recount his adventures have constantly developed the character of Spirou and his entourage.

Hokusai - Views of Mount Fuji and other landscapes ,

Hokusai (1760-1849) is probably one of the most well-known of Japanese artists. He enjoyed an exceptionnaly long career and left behind a highly varied oeuvre, including paintings, book illustrations and prints, all with such classical themes as portraits of actors and beautiful women, and landscapes. It is particularly to these last that he owes his fame, both in Japan during his lifetime and in the West up to the present. His views of Mount Fuji are icons of the art of the Japanese print and perhaps even of Japan itself. Totally in the Japanese tradition, he seldom pictures the countryside without a human presence - in his case, it is the ordinary man during his daily activities that he shows, rather than famous actors, heroes or beauties.
For this exhibition, a selection has been made from the rich collection of the Royal Museums of Art and History, whose Japanese print collection totals 7 500 items, often in an exceptionally good state of preservation. Fifty works by Hokusai will be on show at the exhibition, together with a few by his pupils; the most valuable of the works will be substituted halfway through the exhibition.
Change of the most fragile prints on show from Tuesday 30 April on.

Brussel shows the exhibition Kandinsky & Russia. From 8 March up to 30 June, you can come and admire more than 150 works of art at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. Among these works of art: about fifty paintings of Wassily Kandinsky (Moscow 1866 - Neuilly-sur-Seine 1944), next to some popular art works and paintings of Larionov and Malévitch. Most of the works come from very renowned Russian museums such as the Russian Museum of Saint Petersburg.
After 100 years, Kandinsky returns to Belgium! In May 1913, he exhibited at the Georges Giroux Gallery, now gone but at the time a Brussels cultural hotspot. The paintings and works of art that can now be seen at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium take you back to the Russia of the 1901 1922 period: from symbolism to avant-garde. A truly wonderful journey …
The exhibition Kandinsky & Russia is subdivided in four separate parts with the following suggestive titles: «Experiencing the art of painting», «Listening to the art of painting», «Amidst nature» and «Kandinsky and mythology». It is the first time that this collection of 150 works is shown in Belgium. It shows the artistic and intellectual complexity of a true genius who drew inspiration at the same time from the Russian symbolist movement, Greek culture, German metaphysics, orthodox spirituality and esotericism.

Brussels and Tintin,
Even though Hergé tried to smooth out some of the unduly glaring Brussels references, there is no doubt that the author derived inspiration from his own everyday life and the world he lived in. Cafés, streets, hotels, theatres, museums or parks: the Brussels atmosphere is woven into the filigree of his work throughout. Oftentimes, Tintin, Snowy and their friends are seen against the backdrop of the capital’s typical cityscapes.

|
Early eighteenth century Paris. Shortly before the emergence of Rococo, Watteau caused a sensation in Paris salons with his sensual paintings. His work is all the more exceptional given that the painter lived a short yet full life. In collaboration with the Palais des Beaux-Arts Lille the Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels pays homage to this artist with an exhibition bringing together works from all over the world. One of the key themes of this exhibition is music. The renowned conductor and musician, William Christie, is the guest curator of this exhibition and will also perform in eight concerts featuring music by Watteau's contemporaries. The outcome is an integrated arts experience and a parallel program of educational activities, lectures and an encounter with the author, Pierre Michon.

After delighting Venice, Lyons and San Francisco, the exhibition “Fortuny by Isabelle de Borchgrave : A world of paper” can finally be seen in Brussels!
For this exhibition, Isabelle has applied her exceptional skill and talent to making more than eighty pieces by hand and in paper, creating an unusual look at the world of Mariano Fortuny: these works illustrate certain episodes in his life and introduce characters who have had an influence on his life.
The exhibition will be playful, dream-like and colourful. It is conceived and organised like a journey through senses will be stimulated through this invitation to travel.
Not to mention a space where visitors have the opportunity to touch pieces at various stages of the creative processes and the materials used to make the works.

ADesigned by the Austrian company EMS Entertainment, this major exhibition has been criss-crossing Europe since 2002 and has already attracted more than 1.3 million visitors.
It is a superb reproduction of the last major archaeological discovery of the 20th century after the Tomb of Tutankhamon: the terracotta army of the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi, a treasure the first fragments of which were discovered in 1974, declared part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1987.
More than 150 warriors have been reproduced in impressive detail, with horses, chariots and the ditch in which they were discovered.
A colour diorama is projected on 300 m³ around the ditch.
Visitors will also attend a sound and light show relating the history of the first Emperor of China and his army, and will be handed documentation on the fascinating story of the exceptional archaeological discovery.
More than 70 replicas are also exhibited in showcases: warriors, horses, weapons, jewellery, household implements, works of art from the period…
Very large images accompanied by explanatory tests complete this extraordinarily playful and instructional exhibition for the general public.

After the successful exhibition Rubens: A Genius at Work (14.09.2007-28.01.2008), the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels are planning a major exhibition on Jordaens and the Antique in 2012-2013. A second venue is planned from the end of February until the beginning of June at the Fridericianum (Museumlandschaft Hessen Kassel), site of the world-famous Documenta.Of the well-known Flemish trio “Rubens-Van Dyck-Jordaens,” Jacob Jordaens (Antwerp, 1593-1678) has been studied the least. The exhibition will present an entirely new picture of Jordaens. Instead of the painter of uncomplicated genre scenes works like Twelfth Night, or The King Drinks, and As the Old Sing, So the Young Pipe we find an artist intelligent enough to take over part of Rubens's market share with lively mythological and antique scenes.Loans of around 80 paintings and drawings, tapestries and sculpture from major museums and little-known private collections from Spain (Prado), Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst), the United Kingdom (Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery) and Austria (Albertina), supplemented with key works from Brussels and Kassel, will offer the public lesser known yet unexpectedly engaging episodes from classical antique sources from Ovid's Metamorphoses to Diogenes Laertius's Lives and Opinions of Famous Philosophers. As was the case for the Rubens exhibition, Jordaens and the Antique represents four years of thorough scholarly research and a major restoration campaign. In the years leading up to the exhibition's opening, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels, and the Museumlandschaft Hessen Kassel will be restoring the masterpieces by Jordaens in their own collections.

Light is at the heart of the celebrations in mid winter. Ever keen to reinvent Winter Wonders and to boost its appeal after 10 successful years, the City of Brussels wants to bolster the event with top quality artistic fare. Beyond the traditional Christmas lights, Winter Wonders has called on light sculptures to dare new forms. Some 5 artistic installations from the Market Square to the big wheel will illuminate your way as real “dreams of light.”
Created in 2002 at the initiative of the City of Brussels, Winter Wonders has unrelentingly spared no effort ever since to enhance its appeal among the Belgian and foreign public visiting the country’s capital.
Famous by now, the 2-km Christmas concourse in the heart of our magnificent capital will get us dreaming this year again with its unique atmosphere, quality activities, varied culinary specialities, discoveries of other worlds, enchanting lights, etc.
Alongside traditional features (skating rink, merry-go-rounds, big wheel, …) that have turned Winter Wonders into an internationally renowned event not to be missed, this year’s edition will boast several new attractions.
The City of Brussels wishes to focus particularly on the quality of its cultural activities this year, to turn Winter Wonders into a distinctive label for the future.

Fritkot Festival, 1 november - 4 december 2012

|
Brussels without its frietkoten/baraques à frites (chip shops), that would be like the Statue of Liberty without a torch or the Mona Lisa without a smile. Chippies fill our streets with that most delectable of smells and warm the cockles of our hearts on winter evenings. Some Fritkots have even been awarded official listed status with Brusselicious set to celebrate them in a way that is nothing short of original. A competition? A regional election? The surprise is certain to delight those addicted to frites mayo (chips and mayonnaise) and frikandel/fricadelle (deep-fried spicy mince meat sausage) with andalouse sauce ...
The Year of Gastronomy is coming to a spectacular end, but we can still look forward to a few more surprises… So, through Brusselicious, VISITBRUSSELS is gearing up to celebrate a national food product that is the envy of the world and one that our French neighbours love so much that they even try to make it their own. We’re talking of course about genuine and unmatched Belgian chips, also known as fries!
Talk of chips naturally brings us to the subject of chip shops and especially ‘fritkots’, the traditional stands for vendors of chips, found on streets all over the city of Brussels! From 1 November to 4 December, Belgian chips will be served up in many different ways and be awarded all the honour they so justly deserve.
Fritkots in the spotlight
If we want to draw attention to chips in Brussels, we should make sure that we also highlight the people who make them. Generally speaking, those who run fritkots are colourful characters and are well-known in their local area. So when you fancy some chips you will normally head for a stand run by Titine, or Jean-Jacques or Henri… These are local people, the ones you can chat with, and the ones who see so many people passing that they always know a little about everyone…
These characters, one and all, are part and parcel of Belgium’s cultural heritage (and we’re being deadly serious when we say that!). They richly deserve their brief turn in the spotlight.

From tourist to political refugee
Victor Hugo spent a total of around five hundred days living in Brussels. The first time, he came to admire the city as a tourist, before Brussels went on to take on a different meaning in his life as a crucial location for his career as a writer and a thinker. In 1862, this inspiring link with Brussels prompted the publication of ‘Les Misérables’. Whilst based in what is today’s European capital, 150 years ago Victor Hugo was the first to launch an appeal to build a United States of Europe.

Many paintings tell us what our ancestors ate and drank, the kitchenware they used, as well as how, when and for whom these dishes were prepared and served. It is fairly common to see paintings of food that has today been forgotten or fallen out of favour, as well as other kinds of food recently ‘rediscovered' such as medlars, Jerusalem artichokes, swedes and horseradish. Some things eaten in the olden days and which were occasionally considered the height of sophistication are no longer deemed edible. Examples of these include songbirds, swans and peacocks. The food served up on the table varies by season, as well as the period, culture, occasion and social class. This applies not only to the food, but also to all the equipment with which it is prepared, served, eaten or drunk. So the paintings contain additional information on the culinary culture of a period, information that might not be immediately obvious to the casual observer. Hence the need sometimes for further contextual explanation.
For ‘Brusselicious', 18 paintings that tell ‘stories' have been selected at the Museum of Ancient Art and from the collections of 19th-century paintings. Visitors will be given a trilingual and fully illustrated guide, free of charge, featuring explanations of each one of these works. Few or no changes have been made to the usual display of the permanent collections. On the route around the museum, relevant paintings are indicated with small numbered stickers that clearly display the Brusselicious logo. The 19th-century works are gathered together in and around room 57.The route starts in the 16th-century kitchen and markets of paintings by Pieter Aertsen, ending with the breakfast by Isidore Verheyden, circa 1905.

Brussels hosts the 3rd Comic Strip Festival, 8 - 9 September 2012

Comic Strips obviously feel at home in Brussels! Our cartoon heroes are everywhere book shops, wall frescoes, exhibitions, art galleries and TV shows. Even Hollywood has fallen under the spell and on 21 October last year Brussels was the venue for the world premiere of Steven Spielberg’s cinema adaptation of Tintin, while the Schtroumpfs were a wild success in the USA last summer. The sequels of these two adaptations of our national comic strips are expected in 2013.
The Comic Strip Festival was created in 2010 by the Brussels-Capital Region as a logical continuation of Comic Strip Year organised in Brussels in 2009.
For the 2012 edition, Brussels will experience a weekend full of colour on 8 and 9 September, with a totally new CS Festival on Place des Palais, as well as a 3D mapping show on Place Royale, the Comic Strip market in Saint-Géry, the Balloons Day Parade, a CS dinner at MOOF, and CS-inspired guided tours and exhibitions at the festival and all around the city, in particular at Bruxelles Info Place (BIP) and the Belgian Comic Strip Centre.
During this amazing weekend, Place des Palais will offer museums, exhibitions, publishers, bookshops, boutiques and signing sessions, alongside the Saint-Gilles Comics Festival and its St-Michel prizes.

BSF what is it
Just what is the Brussels Summer Festival?
10 DAYS OF MUSIC ...
The BSF is firstly a music festival, but it’s not like any other. It features a host of different styles, tickets are very reasonably priced, and it’s uniquely located in the royal quarter of Brussels. The BSF is a different kind of festival ! ...
& MUCH MORE!
The BSF is about more than the four main stages, it’s also ‘… & Much More’! It also features concerts indoors, ‘BSF Indoors’, a collaboration with five of the leading Brussels museums in the Mont des Arts area (MIM, Coudenberg, BELvue, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Bozar), and many related activities: an ‘Urban Village’, screenings of short films from the CINEMATEK all along the route, street activities, etc.
The Brussels Summer Festival also features classical music:
Classissimo, the classical part of the BSF, was launched five years ago.
Its programme includes internationally famous and emerging artists.
